Halloween candy is small, but it adds up. Chocolate-based candy brings saturated fat (from cocoa butter, milk fat and palm oil), while fruity sweets have almost none but a lot of sugar. Which is the bigger issue depends on your numbers: LDL responds to saturated fat, and triglycerides respond to sugar.

The short version

One fun-size chocolate bar has roughly 1 to 3 g of saturated fat; three or four is a quarter to half of a 13 g day. Fruity sweets have under 1 g but lots of sugar. Dark chocolate isn't lower in saturated fat than milk chocolate, but it has more fibre and less sugar. Pick the one you really want, and put the rest away.

Brand recipes change and fun-size weights vary a little, so treat these as a guide and check the wrapper. The pattern is clear: a Snickers fun size has about 1.4 g, a Kit Kat mini about 1.8 g, and a handful of fruity sweets close to zero. Three or four chocolate minis is where the saturated fat starts to matter.

Sugar, triglycerides and the other half of the story

Almost all candy is mostly sugar. The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar to about 6 teaspoons (100 kcal, 25 g) a day for most women and 9 teaspoons (150 kcal, 36 g) for most men. A few fun-size bars can use that up. Added sugar raises triglycerides in many people, and a large meta-analysis found that eating more free sugars raised triglycerides and LDL slightly, independently of weight.

So fruity sweets aren't "free": if your triglycerides are high, they are the sweets to limit. If your LDL is the problem, the chocolate and peanut-butter candy deserves more attention. See our guides to chocolate and cholesterol and sugar and cholesterol.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Halloween candy for high cholesterol?

Fruity or gummy sweets (such as jelly beans, Twizzlers and Skittles) have almost no saturated fat, so they suit LDL best, but they are high in sugar and not a good choice if your triglycerides are high. Among chocolates, smaller portions matter more than brand: one or two fun-size bars is a reasonable treat.

Is dark chocolate better for cholesterol than milk chocolate?

Not for saturated fat: dark chocolate has about as much per ounce as milk chocolate because cocoa butter is high in saturated fat. Dark chocolate does have more fibre and less sugar, and the saturated fat in cocoa butter (stearic acid) has a more neutral effect on LDL than some other saturated fats. Keep portions small either way.

How much saturated fat is in a fun-size Snickers?

A fun-size Snickers (about 15 g) has roughly 1.4 g of saturated fat. A full-size bar (57 g) has about 5 g.

Can I eat Halloween candy if I have high triglycerides?

In small amounts, yes. Added sugar raises triglycerides in many people, so keep candy to a few pieces and avoid sugary drinks alongside it. Check with your doctor if your triglycerides are very high.

Is candy corn bad for cholesterol?

Candy corn is made mostly of sugar and has very little fat, so it has no meaningful effect on LDL. It is still high in sugar, which matters more for triglycerides and weight.
